The Core Director will serve as the manager of the Electron Microscopy Core Facility at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, supervising the day-to- day operations of the Electron Microscopy Core. This individual will be the on- site technical specialist/coordinator to optimize protocols for individualized users and help Principal Investigators to prepare methodologies and analyses for funding agencies and peer-reviewed professional journals; coordinate all activities conducted in the core facility; ensure all equipment is operational and train users for instrumentation. The Director will be responsible for overseeing efficient, fair and cost-effective operation of and access to electron microscopy instrumentation and providing consultation and educational training to users. The Director will report to the Chair of the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology for supervision and direction. Core support is for 0.50 FTE with the remaining .50 FTE support potentially obtained through collaborative research or academic participation. This job entails
Maintaining the Tecnai12BT electron microscope and related equipment in good operating order.
Preparing and analyzing samples from core users, as needed. Training core users in preparing and analyzing their own samples, as needed.
Providing advice on experimental design, keeping current on the latest developments in electron microscopy, and keeping the facility operational.
Working with faculty and researchers within the University to develop new methods and implement established methods for imaging samples.
Maintaining timely, accurate billing records for preparing/analyzing samples, user training time, facility use and beam time on the microscope.
Providing diagnostic service for the electron microscope and related equipment.
Providing instrument repair and upgrades as needed to the extent possible within the budget.

Masters degree required or equivalent experience.
At least one year of in-depth experience with electron microscopy Preferred:
Ph.D. in biology or other scientific discipline appropriate to the job.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The applicant should have experience with techniques in electron microscopy and a good understanding of cell biology. Excellent record keeping ability, communication skills, and ability to work independently. Preference given to applicants familiar with operation and maintenance of the Tecnai microscope.
